Powerful Mission Statements

Missions Statements in Business Come in Different Disguises

Having a short, strong and powerful mission statement in business makes sense and can be constructed in one sentence like Wal-Mart’s. "To give ordinary folk the chance to buy the same thing as rich people" is clear and concise. This one sentence is powerful, hopeful and instills a sense of equality. A one-line mission statement also gives impact in a fast and hyper world and can be underpinned with further mission statements for the employees and families, which keeps the business on track. Logos can do very much the same thing as a written mission statement tucked away somewhere and brought out at meetings to remind others of what the business is all about.

Hypnotically Subliminal Mission Statements

Whatever the message, the impact will be designed for one thing only. Instilling values, creating beliefs and informing customers who you are as a businessperson and what you stand for. All this is hypnotically subliminal and prickles the senses. Some business may say that a mission statement is mandatory. This is usually from the old established businesses. Another would feel a mission statement was time wasting and would prefer their statement of intent to be in the everyday actions. This noble document acted as a constant reminder to oneself.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words in Mission Statements

Everyday actions need to speak for themselves. Often too much time is wasted on writing missions statements and then forgetting the whole process. However whatever mission statement you go for, there still needs to be an implication of core values and principles in place for stability and long-term growth. So how do you create a genuine mission statement, which honours everyone and the business?

  1. Keep the process simple.
  2. Too long and the statement will be filed away and never looked at.
  3. Ask everyone who is to be included in the business for ideas.
  4. Add an outline of the values and beliefs of each person
  5. Use words, sounds and feelings that create images, something that goes deep into the very being of the soul.
  6. Utilize as many of the senses as possible achieves greater results.

Less Said Best on Mission Statements for any Business

Remember for modern dynamic businesses the motto of  ‘less said’ is the best policy. A tall order when values vary from people to people, and an even harder to produce simplistic statements that flows naturally and means everything. The statement must come across as genuine, meaningful and hopeful to the reader. Writing a mission statement for a family business may hold more personal views, beliefs and values may be used, but rarely in the frontline statements. Be realistic, desirable and achievable. Avoid impossible actions or anything that goes against your families’ beliefs and values. If you try to emulate other businesses and the values don’t match yours, the lack of genuineness will show through. If you truly believe in your service and product then use your own gifts of awareness and understanding to create a statement. People can see quite clearly what is genuine and what appears to be false. Be true to your own beliefs and values and the real reasons you wanted to go into business.

Research Other Mission Statements in Businesses

If your business is gong to be a shop in a shopping all, or on the high street you can use this as your mission statement. Let me give you an idea of what a reflective mission statement is without words being displayed and yet has a clear message the moment you enter the building. Can you guess which company I am talking about? The shops are welcoming, staff eager to please and you are encouraged to touch, play and have fun. While modern and distinct in style there is a promise of a warm welcome every time by friendly staff. This company doesn’t need to write words, because their products are fun and easy to use. Every store is built on the same familiar styles reflecting a clean cut, modern and smart design. The stores are visually simple, yet beautiful.

Use of the Senses is Very Powerful in any Business

The sounds are welcoming and intriguing with a mixture of technology, music and laughter. People are drawn to pleasant sounds and welcoming people. Someone stands at the door and welcomes you with genuine smile and you respond. Their ‘open house’ policy evokes a sense of respect; trust in the customer and love. Yes ‘love’ and this love is a powerful aphrodisiac! How clever of this company to recognize the natural reflex in all human beings when appreciating beautiful objects, the compulsion to touch! While food is not consumed on the premises, every other sense is catered for. Everything states that work is fun, creative which welcomes like an old friend; there is no indication that life is hard with owning a Mac.

What is a Powerful Mission Statement!

“You’re always welcome, come in have fun, play with me, talk to me…I’m listening. I value who you are, can we help, and do you need anything? All these and more show a clear strong mission statement. This company is saying, “I love you and I value you” This subtle play of all your emotions makes you want to do what? Buy, if not straight away - but you will be back and back you go to have a bit more of that love and attention!

And yet here is no sign of any autocratic mission statements on banners, but my goodness what an experience. You just want to go back for more and when you do, based on how much help you had, you buy, often lots, but have no regrets! If you want a family business to succeed, be extremely successful, you need to capture the unique spirit and energy of your business. You need to have love. Look closely at any family and business values, which will make your business, stand out from the cold impersonal businesses that are around today. A successful mission statement has to be realistic, bold and exciting, but doesn’t have to be written.
